Police Rescue 10 Held Amid Cross River–Benue Communal Tension

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have successfully rescued 10 persons who were reportedly held hostage amid escalating communal tensions between communities along the Cross River and Benue states boundary.

The rescue operation followed intelligence reports received by security agencies regarding the location of the victims in an area affected by recurring disputes over land ownership, farming activities and access to resources.

Police authorities confirmed that the victims were rescued unharmed and have since been reunited with their families after receiving necessary medical attention and support.

During the operation, several suspects believed to be connected to the incident were arrested and are currently assisting investigators.

The recent clashes between communities in parts of Cross River and Benue states have heightened concerns among residents, with reports of displacement, destruction of property and disruption of economic activities.

In response to the situation, security agencies have increased personnel deployment to affected areas to prevent further violence and maintain peace.

Authorities have also appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders and residents to embrace dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution mechanisms rather than resorting to violence.

The police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property while assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to identify and prosecute individuals responsible for acts capable of undermining peace and security.

Security experts have stressed the need for long-term conflict management strategies to address the root causes of recurring communal disputes and foster sustainable peace among affected communities.
