Sanwo-Olu Calls for Active Citizenship as Nigeria Marks 66th Independence Anniversary

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged Nigerians to demonstrate patriotism through responsible actions and active participation in national development rather than limiting it to Independence Day celebrations.

In his message marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, the governor called on citizens to embrace unity, respect diversity and contribute positively to the country’s growth.

Sanwo-Olu said the occasion should serve as both a celebration of Nigeria’s independence and an opportunity for reflection on the nation’s progress and future aspirations.

According to him, patriotism is best expressed through everyday actions that promote social harmony, respect for the rights of others and commitment to the common good.

“As we celebrate the 66th Independence anniversary, let us recommit ourselves to doing what is right, work with our leaders for a better country and walk in unity as one family,” he said.

The governor acknowledged that Nigeria has faced numerous political, economic and social challenges since gaining independence but noted that the country’s resilience remains a source of optimism.

He encouraged citizens to maintain faith in Nigeria’s potential and work collectively toward building a stronger and more prosperous nation.

Sanwo-Olu also urged Nigerians to view the country’s ethnic, religious and cultural diversity as a strength capable of driving national development rather than a source of division.

The governor paid tribute to Nigeria’s founding fathers and generations of citizens who have contributed to preserving the country’s unity and democratic development.

He further encouraged Lagos residents and Nigerians generally to draw inspiration from the sacrifices of those who fought for independence, stressing that nation-building remains a continuous responsibility shared by all citizens.

Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence in Nigeria’s future, saying the decisions and actions of citizens today would shape the country’s next chapter.
