The Federal Government has renewed its call for Nigerians to embrace voluntary blood donation as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s blood supply system and improve healthcare delivery nationwide.
Health officials made the appeal amid growing concerns about the increasing demand for safe blood in hospitals and medical facilities across the country. According to experts, thousands of patients require blood transfusions every day for surgeries, childbirth complications, accident-related injuries and treatment of various medical conditions.
Authorities stressed that voluntary blood donation remains the safest and most reliable source of blood for medical use. They noted that reliance on family replacement donations often creates shortages and delays that can put patients’ lives at risk during emergencies.
The Federal Ministry of Health explained that maintaining an adequate blood reserve is essential for responding effectively to both routine and emergency healthcare needs. Officials urged healthy adults to donate blood regularly and help save lives within their communities.
Medical practitioners have also highlighted the benefits of blood donation, noting that donors undergo health screenings that can help detect certain health conditions early. They emphasised that the process is safe, professionally managed and poses minimal risk when conducted under approved medical guidelines.
Public health advocates believe increasing awareness about blood donation could significantly improve national blood reserves and reduce preventable deaths linked to shortages. They called on religious institutions, schools, corporate organisations and community groups to support donation campaigns and encourage participation.
The campaign forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system and ensure that patients requiring urgent medical attention have access to safe and sufficient blood supplies whenever needed.
