The Senate has urged the Federal Government to intensify military and intelligence operations against terrorists, kidnappers, bandits and other criminal elements operating across the country.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and co-sponsored by other senators during plenary on Tuesday.
Lawmakers called for increased investment in modern military equipment, surveillance technology, intelligence gathering, logistics and welfare packages for members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies.
The Senate said such measures were necessary to ensure that Nigerians can live, work and pursue education without fear.
The upper chamber also urged the government to promptly pay death benefits, insurance claims, pensions and other entitlements due to the families of security personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty.
The motion was prompted by the successful rescue of 39 abducted schoolchildren and seven teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Bamidele commended President Bola Tinubu for directing security agencies to deploy all necessary resources following the abduction on May 15, 2026.
He noted that after more than 50 days of coordinated intelligence-led operations, security operatives rescued the victims on July 10, arrested eight suspected terrorists and neutralised several others.
According to him, the operation demonstrated the growing effectiveness of Nigeria’s security agencies and restored confidence among affected communities.
The Senate paid tribute to three security operatives who lost their lives during the rescue mission. They include Lt. F.A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa and Sgt. Abena John Jerome.
Lawmakers also wished Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain, who sustained injuries during the operation, a speedy recovery.
A minute of silence was observed in honour of the fallen personnel.
Several senators commended the Armed Forces for the successful operation, while Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan called for trauma counselling and psychological support for the rescued victims.
Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who presided over the session, praised President Tinubu’s efforts to tackle insecurity and pledged continued legislative support for security initiatives.
