The Senate has expressed concern over the declining fortunes of Nigerian football following the failure of both the Super Eagles and Super Falcons to qualify for their respective FIFA World Cup tournaments.
The concerns were raised during an emergency meeting of the Senate Committee on Sports with officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in Abuja.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Abdul Ningi, said the meeting was convened at the instance of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who sought explanations on the state of sports, particularly football, in the country.
According to Ningi, the discussions were aimed at helping the committee prepare a comprehensive report for the Senate when lawmakers resume next month.
A major issue highlighted during the meeting was the reported strained relationship between the NFF and the NSC, which the senator described as unhealthy for the growth of football in Nigeria.
He urged both institutions to close ranks and work together to restore confidence in the nation’s football administration.
Ningi also noted that despite increased government support, including improved funding for sports and financial incentives for athletes and officials, Nigerian football has continued to struggle on the international stage.
The Senate committee is expected to present recommendations aimed at repositioning the sector and improving future performances by national teams.
