Shock As Benue MACBAN Chairman Is Gunned Down After Peace Meeting

The Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Risku Muhammad, and his companion, Yakubu Isah, have been killed by gunmen shortly after attending a peace meeting aimed at resolving tensions between herders and farming communities in the state.

The attack occurred on Friday at Okudu village in Otukpo Local Government Area as the victims were returning from a dialogue convened by the Divisional Police Officer of Ohinmini Local Government Area. The meeting was reportedly organised to address recent killings and rising tensions in Ayunne Community and other neighbouring areas.

Sources familiar with the incident said Alhaji Muhammad actively participated in discussions focused on restoring peace and strengthening cooperation among affected communities. His death has therefore generated widespread concern among stakeholders who viewed him as a key advocate of dialogue and peaceful coexistence.

The eldest son of the deceased, Idris Muhammad, confirmed the incident, while the Chairmen of Otukpo and Ohinmini Local Government Areas also verified the killings. Community leaders described the attack as disturbing and capable of undermining ongoing peacebuilding efforts across the region.

Reacting to the incident, the national leadership of MACBAN condemned the killings, describing them as a “dastardly and deeply disturbing act.” The association noted that targeting an individual who had just participated in a reconciliation meeting sends a dangerous signal to those working to promote peace in conflict-prone areas.

The Benue State Police Command confirmed that it had received reports of the incident. Police spokesperson, CSP Udeme Edet, said investigations had commenced and assured residents that efforts were underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

The latest killing comes amid persistent security challenges in Benue State, where clashes involving farmers, herders and criminal elements have continued to claim lives and displace communities. Security analysts warn that attacks on peace advocates could discourage dialogue and further complicate conflict-resolution efforts.

Stakeholders have called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. They insist that protecting individuals engaged in peacebuilding initiatives is essential to restoring stability and rebuilding trust among communities.

The incident has heightened tension across parts of the state and underscores the fragile security situation in Nigeria’s North-Central region, where efforts to achieve lasting peace continue to face significant challenges.
