The Presidency says constitutional amendments aimed at establishing state police are nearing completion following months of consultations among relevant stakeholders.
Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this after a consultative meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu and other senior government officials.
Gbajabiamila said discussions had made significant progress, adding that attention had shifted from whether state police should be created to the legal and operational framework required for implementation.
He noted that enabling legislation would follow the constitutional amendment process and that President Bola Tinubu would be briefed on the outcome of the consultations.
