President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of veteran journalist and Publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, describing his passing as a significant loss to Nigeria’s media industry and democratic development.
Oladipo, who died at the age of 56, was a former Political Editor of The Punch newspaper before establishing The Eagle Online, where he continued his contribution to journalism and digital media.
The President expressed his condolences in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu acknowledged Oladipo’s years of service in political journalism and his commitment to providing credible information to the public through both traditional and digital platforms.
He noted that the deceased’s career demonstrated the important role of journalists in strengthening democracy by keeping citizens informed, holding public officials accountable and providing avenues for public discourse.
The President also recognised Oladipo’s contribution to the development of digital journalism through The Eagle Online, which he founded after his years at The Punch.
“Dotun Oladipo’s death at the age of 56 is a painful loss to the Nigerian media community and to our nation,” Tinubu said.
He described Oladipo as a committed journalist who devoted significant years of his life to informing the public and contributing to Nigeria’s democratic development.
Tinubu extended his condolences to Oladipo’s family, colleagues in the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) and friends, while praying for the repose of his soul.
The President also prayed for strength for the bereaved family and colleagues to cope with the loss.
Oladipo’s death has drawn attention to his decades-long career in journalism, particularly his work in political reporting and his role in Nigeria’s growing digital media space.
