President Bola Tinubu has stated that no ransom was paid and no concession was granted to secure the release of pupils and teachers abducted by suspected Ansaru terrorists in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The President made the declaration on Friday following the successful rescue of the victims after more than 50 days in captivity.
In a statement posted on his verified X handle, Tinubu described the rescue as a victory for Nigeria’s security agencies and a reason for national thanksgiving.
“Tonight, our nation has reason to give thanks. The children and teachers abducted by Ansaru terrorists in Oyo State have been rescued by our security forces, alive and unharmed. No ransom was paid. No concession was made,” he stated.
The victims were abducted on May 15, 2026, when armed men attacked schools in Ahoro-Esinle, Yawota and Alawusa communities in Oriire Local Government Area, kidnapping dozens of pupils and teachers. During the period of captivity, one teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly killed by the abductors.
According to the Presidency, the terrorists had demanded the release of two detained Ansaru commanders as a condition for freeing the victims. However, the Federal Government rejected the demand and continued efforts to secure their release through coordinated security operations.
Tinubu commended the military, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force for their professionalism and courage during the rescue mission.
“I salute every officer and operative whose courage, discipline and professionalism made this possible,” he said.
The President also warned terrorist groups that his administration would continue to pursue individuals and organisations threatening the country’s peace and security.
“To those who seek to spread fear through terror, know that the Nigerian state will pursue you relentlessly. We will protect our people, defend our communities and never relent until peace and security prevail across our country,” he added.
The Presidency disclosed that the operation led to the arrest of eight suspected kidnappers, while several others were neutralised. Tinubu also directed relevant agencies to provide medical care and necessary support for the rescued victims.
He further pledged that justice would be pursued for the victims and the family of Michael Oyedokun, the teacher who lost his life while in captivity.
The rescue has brought an end to one of the country’s longest school abduction incidents in recent months and renewed discussions on strengthening security around schools and vulnerable communities.
