Tinubu Urges Youths: “Don’t Japa, Stay And Build Nigeria”

President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerian youths to remain in the country and contribute to national development, appealing to growing migration trends popularly known as the “japa” syndrome during his Democracy Day national broadcast on Friday, June 12, 2026.

In his address, the President acknowledged the difficulties currently facing young Nigerians but insisted that the country still holds opportunities for growth and innovation. “To our young people: Nigeria is your home and your future. Build here, code here, work here, and vote here,” Tinubu said. He highlighted ongoing government interventions such as student loan schemes, agricultural mechanisation programmes, and support for small and medium enterprises as part of efforts to expand opportunities locally.

Nigeria has in recent years witnessed a steady rise in youth migration driven by unemployment, inflation, insecurity, and search for better living conditions abroad. The “japa” phenomenon has led to concerns about brain drain, especially in critical sectors such as healthcare, technology, and education. Analysts say government appeals alone may not be sufficient unless backed by structural reforms that improve wages, security, and access to quality services.

The President reiterated that sustainable national development requires active participation from young citizens, urging them to see themselves as key stakeholders in nation-building. The administration says it is working on policies aimed at reducing unemployment and improving economic inclusion for youths across the country.
