Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a suspected spy linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) over an alleged plan to attack a military base in Borno State.
The suspect was apprehended during a routine military patrol in the Gwoza axis of the state following intelligence reports that he was gathering strategic information on troop movements and security formations for insurgents.
Military sources disclosed that preliminary investigations indicated the suspect had been monitoring activities around a military facility and was allegedly transmitting sensitive information to ISWAP operatives in preparation for a possible attack.
The arrest forms part of ongoing counter-insurgency operations aimed at dismantling terrorist cells and preventing attacks on both military formations and civilian communities across the North-East region.
Security analysts have repeatedly warned that intelligence gathering remains one of the key tactics employed by insurgent groups to target security personnel and installations. They note that disrupting such networks is critical to weakening the operational capabilities of terrorist organisations.
The military high command commended troops involved in the operation for their vigilance and professionalism, stressing that efforts to neutralise insurgent threats would continue until peace is fully restored in the region.
Authorities said the suspect is currently undergoing further interrogation as investigations continue to identify possible collaborators and uncover the full scope of the planned operation.
The arrest underscores the continuing security challenges in the North-East despite significant gains recorded against insurgent groups in recent years. It also highlights the importance of intelligence-led operations in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.
