SERAP Urges Akpabio, Abbas to Probe Alleged Diversion of ₦6.3bn Constituency Funds

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the leadership of the National Assembly to investigate the alleged diversion of ₦6.3 billion allocated for constituency projects across the country.

In a letter dated Sunday and addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, the organisation described the allegation as a serious breach of public trust requiring urgent attention.

SERAP said the reported diversion of funds intended for community development projects undermines accountability and weakens public confidence in democratic institutions.

The organisation urged both chambers of the National Assembly to launch a transparent and independent investigation into the allegations and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.

According to SERAP, constituency projects are designed to address critical needs in communities, including education, healthcare, infrastructure and social services. Any misuse of funds meant for such projects, it noted, directly affects citizens who depend on them.

The group further called for the publication of comprehensive details of constituency projects, including approved budgets, project locations, contractors and implementation status.

SERAP argued that making such information publicly available would promote transparency, strengthen oversight and discourage corruption.

The organisation also stressed the importance of legislative accountability in ensuring prudent management of public resources.

The latest call comes amid growing public scrutiny of constituency project spending and renewed demands for greater transparency in government expenditures.

Observers say the outcome of any investigation could have significant implications for public trust in the management of constituency intervention funds.
