Vigilantes Repel Bandit Attack, Kill Suspect as Kidnappers Strike Niger Community

Residents of Felegi community in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State are counting their losses after armed bandits launched a fresh attack on the area, abducting several villagers despite fierce resistance from local vigilantes.

The latest assault, which occurred on Sunday, September 6, has once again highlighted the persistent insecurity facing rural communities across parts of the North-Central region, where residents continue to grapple with recurring attacks, kidnappings and threats to their livelihoods.

According to community sources, the attackers stormed Felegi in large numbers, creating panic among residents as they moved through the settlement. The bandits reportedly targeted villagers for abduction, forcing many people to flee for safety.

However, local vigilantes quickly mobilised and confronted the attackers in a gun duel that lasted several minutes. During the exchange, one of the suspected bandits was reportedly killed.

Despite suffering a casualty, the attackers succeeded in escaping with some abducted residents, leaving the community devastated and fearful of future attacks.

A resident who spoke anonymously described the security situation as increasingly difficult, noting that many villagers have been forced to live under constant fear.

“Our community is not safe at all, but we have no choice because there is nowhere to go,” the resident said.

He explained that although some people have suggested relocating to Internally Displaced Persons camps or nearby towns, economic realities have made such options difficult.

“If we leave for towns, we must pay rent and meet other expenses. Many families cannot afford that. We remain here because we have no alternative,” he added.

The resident confirmed that vigilantes fought back bravely during the attack and succeeded in killing one of the armed men, but said the community remains traumatised by the abductions.

The incident adds to growing concerns over banditry in parts of Niger State, where communities have repeatedly called for stronger security presence and sustained operations against criminal groups operating in remote areas.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Niger State Government nor the State Police Command had issued an official statement regarding the attack, the number of abductees, or ongoing efforts to secure their release.

Residents are meanwhile urging authorities to strengthen security deployments and prevent further attacks on vulnerable communities.
