President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has paid tribute to Nigeria’s founding fathers and fallen security personnel as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
In a goodwill message released on Wednesday, Akpabio reflected on Nigeria’s journey since independence, urging citizens to embrace unity, patriotism and collective responsibility in building a stronger nation.
The Senate President described the anniversary as a moment to honour the sacrifices of those who contributed to the country’s freedom and development.
“Sixty-six years ago, our national flag rose to proclaim the birth of an independent Nigeria. With it rose the hopes of millions: the hope of freedom, the dignity of self-government and the conviction that we could shape our own destiny,” he stated.
Akpabio also acknowledged the contributions of Nigeria’s founding leaders, saying their efforts laid the foundation for future generations.
He paid special tribute to members of the Armed Forces and security agencies who lost their lives defending the country, noting that their sacrifices continue to safeguard Nigeria’s unity and stability.
According to him, despite facing political, economic and social challenges over the decades, Nigerians have remained resilient and committed to national progress.
The Senate President urged citizens to see the nation’s cultural, ethnic and religious diversity as a source of strength rather than division.
“Our diversity enriches this inheritance. Across languages, cultures and faiths, we belong to one national family,” he said.
Akpabio further reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to supporting policies and legislative measures aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians and strengthening democratic governance.
He called on citizens to renew their commitment to peace, unity and nation-building as the country continues its development journey.
