An Anambra State High Court has sentenced a church choirmaster to 25 years imprisonment after finding him guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl.
The judgment was delivered on Monday following the conclusion of trial proceedings in which the court reviewed evidence presented by the prosecution.
According to court records, the victim was a member of the church choir and had been placed under the guidance and mentorship of the defendant.
The court heard that the defendant repeatedly sexually assaulted the teenager, taking advantage of the position of trust entrusted to him within the church community.
In delivering judgment, the presiding judge described the offence as a grave violation of the victim’s rights and a betrayal of the confidence reposed in the convict.
The court held that the prosecution had established its case beyond reasonable doubt and consequently imposed a 25-year prison sentence.
Reacting to the judgment, the Anambra State Government commended the judiciary for ensuring justice for the victim and reaffirmed its commitment to combating sexual and gender-based violence.
Officials noted that the conviction sends a strong message that perpetrators of crimes against children will be prosecuted and punished in accordance with the law.
Child rights advocates also welcomed the ruling, describing it as an important step towards protecting minors and encouraging survivors of abuse to seek justice.
Authorities urged parents, guardians and community leaders to remain vigilant and promptly report cases involving the abuse or exploitation of children.
The conviction underscores ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and the judiciary to address sexual offences and strengthen the protection of vulnerable persons.
