The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University branch, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Taraba State Government and the university management, demanding the implementation of outstanding agreements or risk industrial action.
The decision was announced by the branch chairman, Dr. Joshua Garba Mbave, following resolutions reached during the union’s congress held on August 13, 2026.
According to the union, the ultimatum took immediate effect and will expire on August 26. ASUU said the action was in line with resolutions of its National Executive Council concerning the continued failure to implement provisions of the ASUU/Federal Government 2025 Agreement applicable to the institution.
Mbave expressed concern over what he described as persistent delays in implementing agreed welfare and financial commitments despite previous communications by the union and the National Universities Commission to relevant authorities.
He noted that the union had exercised patience and maintained industrial peace in the interest of academic stability and uninterrupted learning activities. However, he stressed that the continued non-implementation of agreements had become unacceptable.
ASUU maintained that agreements reached through recognised negotiation processes must be honoured within a reasonable timeframe, adding that failure to do so undermines established principles of collective bargaining and industrial relations.
Among its key demands are the immediate implementation of all outstanding provisions of the agreement and the payment of arrears and financial entitlements owed to members from January 2026 to date.
The union emphasised that the ultimatum should not be interpreted as a request for further discussions or assurances but as a formal demand for concrete action.
It urged the Taraba State Government, the university’s Governing Council and management to address the issues urgently in order to prevent an escalation of the dispute.
ASUU warned that failure to comply within the stipulated period could result in further action that may affect academic activities at the institution.
