Atiku faults FG’s security strategy, calls for urgent reforms

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has criticised the Federal Government’s approach to tackling insecurity, accusing it of failing to learn from past security lapses.

Atiku said terrorists and bandits have continued to evolve their tactics while government responses remain largely unchanged, leaving communities vulnerable to attacks.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, the former vice president expressed concern over the spread of terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across different parts of the country.

He argued that criminal groups have consistently adapted their operations, identified weaknesses in the security system and exploited them to carry out fresh attacks.

According to him, the government has failed to demonstrate the same level of adaptation and strategic reform required to confront emerging security threats.

The former vice president called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s National Counterterrorism Policy and proposed the establishment of a Terrorism Violence Peer Review Mechanism involving affected communities and security stakeholders.

He also advocated the creation of specialised Counterterrorism Fusion Centres across the six geopolitical zones to improve intelligence gathering and coordination.
