The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has cautioned politicians and their supporters against invoking the name of Jesus Christ in partisan political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, issued the warning following comments by social commentator Precious Oruche, popularly known as Mama Pee, who referenced Jesus Christ while discussing Labour Party figure Peter Obi and the 2027 race.
According to Okoh, political competition should not be framed in religious or messianic terms, stressing that Jesus Christ should never be used as a campaign tool or political symbol.
“Jesus Christ is not a political candidate, a campaign slogan or a weapon to advance one politician against another,” he said.
The CAN president emphasised that Nigerians are free to support any candidate of their choice but warned against elevating political figures to a status reserved for spiritual leaders.
He called on citizens to focus discussions on governance, competence, character, policies and national development rather than mixing politics with sacred religious beliefs.
CAN urged all political actors to conduct their campaigns responsibly and preserve respect for shared religious values as the 2027 elections approach.
