Children under the age of five have emerged as the most affected group in Nigeria’s ongoing cholera outbreak, which has recorded 5,260 suspected cases and 67 deaths across 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) disclosed this in its latest cholera situation report covering the period up to May 31, 2026.
According to the agency, reported cases increased by 73 per cent compared to the corresponding period in 2025, although deaths declined by 37 per cent.
Borno State recorded the highest number of infections with 4,510 cases, representing 86 per cent of the national total.
Maiduguri Local Government Area alone accounted for 2,706 cases.
The NCDC placed the national case fatality rate at 1.3 per cent and warned that the rainy season could increase transmission due to poor sanitation and contaminated water sources.
The agency said treatment centres, vaccination campaigns and other response measures remain ongoing.
