Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, believes President Bola Tinubu could hold a major advantage in the 2027 presidential election if opposition parties fail to unite behind a common candidate.
The singer shared his assessment during an interview with News Central on Tuesday, August 18, while discussing Nigeria’s political situation and the recently concluded Osun State governorship election.
Davido said his view should not be interpreted as a personal endorsement of Tinubu. Instead, he argued that the incumbent could benefit from the divisions and competing ambitions within the opposition.
According to him, too many politicians are currently positioning themselves for the presidency, making it difficult for opposition forces to build a united front.
“In the South alone, almost eight people want to be president. Why can’t all of you guys sit down together?” he said.
Davido argued that the political equation could change significantly if opposition groups were able to agree on a single candidate. He maintained that a united opposition would pose a stronger challenge to the ruling party and could make the 2027 contest more competitive.
“If there was a unified opposition, presidents might have a problem. But they’re not unified,” he added.
His comments come amid increased political activity ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition politicians and political groups exploring possible alliances against the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Despite his concerns about the opposition’s fragmentation, Davido said the outcome of the Osun governorship election had given him hope about the future of Nigeria’s politics.
He particularly pointed to young Nigerians as an important force in shaping the country’s future, saying the events surrounding the election showed that there was still room for optimism.
Davido has previously separated his personal political views from those of his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who has publicly expressed support for Tinubu.
The singer said his involvement in supporting Adeleke during the Osun governorship election was largely because of their family relationship and should not be viewed as support for any wider political alignment.
He also maintained that he is not currently backing any particular candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
Davido has in the past criticised Nigeria’s political system, describing it as deeply flawed while insisting that Nigerians should remain free to decide who they support.
His latest comments appear to centre on the strategic challenges facing opposition parties. For Davido, the key issue is simple: unless opposition politicians set aside competing ambitions and unite, Tinubu could enter the 2027 election with a significant advantage.
