The Federal Government, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organisation, has launched a $350,000 intervention project aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s response to bird flu outbreaks.
The nine-month programme seeks to improve surveillance systems, enhance diagnostic capabilities and strengthen biosecurity measures in selected states.
Officials said approximately 240 animal health workers will receive specialised training under the initiative.
The project focuses on combating Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, a disease that has repeatedly affected poultry farms and threatened food security across the country.
Speaking during the launch, stakeholders emphasised the importance of collaboration under the One Health approach, which recognises the connection between human, animal and environmental health.
Authorities noted that recurring outbreaks have caused significant losses within the poultry industry and affected the livelihoods of farmers.
The intervention is expected to strengthen early detection systems and improve emergency response mechanisms, reducing the risk of widespread outbreaks.
Experts say improved surveillance and biosecurity practices are critical to protecting Nigeria’s poultry sector and preserving public health.
The initiative also seeks to support efforts to restore confidence in the industry and maintain international trade opportunities.
