FG Gives Human Resource Officers 12 Months to Obtain Professional Certification

The Federal Government has directed human resource officers across ministries, departments and agencies to obtain approved professional certifications within 12 months.

According to a circular issued by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, officers who fail to secure recognised certifications may become ineligible for certain human resource positions after the transition period.

Approved certification bodies include the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, the Society for Human Resource Management and other recognised professional organisations.

The government said the directive forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening professionalism and efficiency within the civil service.

Officials explained that employees currently serving in HR positions would be allowed to continue during the grace period provided they demonstrate progress toward obtaining certification.

The reform is expected to improve workforce management, staff development and organisational performance across government institutions.

Observers say the policy aligns with global best practices and reflects growing recognition of human resource management as a specialised profession requiring continuous training and professional development.

Civil service experts have welcomed the initiative, arguing that professional certification will enhance service delivery and strengthen institutional capacity.

The directive takes immediate effect, with ministries and agencies expected to begin implementation processes accordingly.
