Spanish striker Gonzalo Garcia has completed his switch from Real Madrid to Fulham, following his former coach Alvaro Arbeloa across to west London in a transfer both clubs confirmed on Monday.
The 22-year-old arrives fresh off his most productive campaign yet at Madrid, having scored eight goals last season, six of them in La Liga, highlighted by a hat-trick against Real Betis in January. His move comes with a long-term commitment attached: Garcia has signed with Fulham through 2031, with the club holding an option to extend the deal by a further year. Spanish media reported the fee at around €40 million ($46 million), with Madrid said to have negotiated a 30% sell-on clause into the agreement.
The reunion with Arbeloa carries clear significance for how the move came together. The Spanish coach, who worked within Madrid’s youth setup before being promoted to the senior job following Xabi Alonso’s dismissal in January, took charge at Fulham earlier this summer, and Garcia’s arrival suggests a deliberate effort to bring familiar faces into his new project. He’s not the only one making that journey either. Attacking midfielder Cesar Palacios, 21, who broke into Madrid’s first team under Arbeloa in recent months, has also joined Fulham as part of the same wave of departures.
For Madrid, Garcia’s exit fits into a broader squad overhaul now underway following two consecutive trophyless seasons, a drought that led the club to bring in veteran coach Jose Mourinho as Arbeloa’s replacement. With multiple young players departing alongside incoming signings elsewhere in the squad, the club appears to be resetting significant parts of its roster as it looks to return to form under new leadership.
