Nigeria’s digital economy recorded another milestone in July 2026 as the number of active internet subscribers climbed to 157.7 million, while nationwide data consumption rose significantly, according to newly released figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The telecommunications regulator reported that active internet subscriptions across licensed service providers reached 157,706,496 in July, reflecting continued growth in internet adoption across the country.
The data also showed a substantial increase in internet usage, with total data consumption rising to 1,662,021.45 terabytes during the month, compared with 1,532,172.67 terabytes recorded in June.
Industry analysts say the figures highlight the growing dependence of Nigerians on digital services for communication, education, entertainment, commerce and business operations.
The latest statistics extend a remarkable growth trend that has persisted for 12 consecutive months, spanning August 2025 to July 2026. During that period, the number of active internet users increased from 140.3 million to over 157.7 million, with only a slight decline recorded in June 2026.
Stakeholders attribute the growth to expanding network coverage, increased smartphone adoption and a favourable regulatory environment that has encouraged investment in telecommunications infrastructure.
Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo, credited the sustained growth to stable regulatory policies and government initiatives designed to support the telecommunications industry.
According to him, the predictability of regulatory policies has helped improve investor confidence and create conditions for continued expansion within the sector. He noted that the telecoms industry is beginning to attract increased foreign investment due to improved stability and policy consistency.
Adebayo also highlighted the Federal Government’s Zero-rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content Programme as a potential driver of future growth. The initiative allows users to access approved educational websites and platforms without incurring data charges, supported by a daily allocation of 100 megabytes for educational purposes.
Industry observers believe the programme could encourage greater internet usage among students and educators while supporting digital learning across the country.
The continued rise in internet penetration and data consumption is expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy, expand opportunities for innovation and support broader efforts to increase digital inclusion nationwide.
