More than 51,000 film lovers gathered at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, over the weekend for a landmark screening of Black Market the Movie, turning the venue into a celebration of Nigerian cinema and creative ambition.
The record-setting event, which featured Johnnie Walker Blonde as the official drinks partner, highlighted the growing influence of young Nigerian filmmakers and the possibilities for African storytelling on a global stage.
The massive audience came together to celebrate director and cinematographer Nora Awolowo, whose achievement formed the centrepiece of the historic screening attempt. Thousands of young people and cinema enthusiasts participated in an event that combined filmmaking, culture and entertainment on an unprecedented scale.
For Awolowo, the occasion represented a significant step in a journey that began with mobile filmmaking and eventually led to directing and cinematography on a much larger platform.
“Tonight proved what is possible when young African creators are given the backing to dream without limits,” Awolowo, the director and director of photography of Black Market the Movie, said.
She also acknowledged Johnnie Walker Blonde’s support, describing the opportunity to stage an event of such magnitude as a dream.
“Moving from mobile filmmaking to directing an event of this scale is a dream, and having Johnnie Walker Blonde champion this journey made the experience unforgettable,” she added.
The partnership formed part of Johnnie Walker’s broader engagement with youth culture and unconventional creative expression.
Cynthia Ufele, Senior Brand Manager, Johnnie Walker, African Partner Markets, said Awolowo’s journey reflected the brand’s “Keep Walking” philosophy and its focus on supporting young creators.
“At Johnnie Walker, our mission is to sit at the intersection of youth culture and non-traditional creativity,” Ufele said.
She described the gathering of more than 50,000 people at Tafawa Balewa Square as an illustration of what could happen when Nigerian creators receive support to pursue ambitious ideas.
The event also provided a platform for celebrating the changing landscape of African cinema, where emerging filmmakers are increasingly exploring new approaches to storytelling, production and audience engagement.
Through its involvement in the screening, Johnnie Walker Blonde positioned itself alongside a major moment in Nigeria’s creative culture, linking the brand with themes of ambition, innovation and self-expression.
The partnership also reinforced its stated commitment to encouraging young creators and visual storytellers to pursue their ambitions and celebrate progress.
For the filmmakers and thousands of attendees at Tafawa Balewa Square, the gathering offered more than a large-scale movie screening. It became a celebration of what emerging Nigerian creative talent can achieve when given the opportunity, resources and audience to pursue ambitious ideas.
