Lagos 2027: Governorship Candidates to Face Off in November 8 Debate

Governorship candidates seeking to lead Lagos State in 2027 will have an opportunity to outline their policy priorities and respond to questions on pressing public concerns during a debate scheduled for November 8, 2026.

The Nigeria Debate Consortium announced the date in a statement issued on Sunday, describing the event as an opportunity for residents to assess the candidates’ proposals ahead of the general elections.

The debate is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at The Hub by IALA, House of His Glory, Plot 18, Providence Road, beside Keystone Bank, Marwa, Lekki, Lagos State.

The statement was jointly signed by TVC News Director of News, Babajide Kolade-Otitoju, and Channels Television General Manager, Kingsley Uranta, on behalf of the consortium.

According to the organisers, the Lagos governorship debate will be the first in a series of engagements designed to promote informed political participation ahead of the 2027 elections.

The consortium comprises five Nigerian media organisations: Channels Television, TVC News, Punch Newspaper, TheCable and Vanguard Newspaper.

It explained that the initiative would provide an independent platform for candidates to present their plans, defend their policy choices and demonstrate their understanding of the challenges confronting Lagos residents.

Among the issues expected to dominate discussions are transportation, infrastructure development, security, housing, education and healthcare.

Candidates will also be expected to address unemployment, job creation and economic growth, particularly how their proposed policies could improve living conditions across the state.

The organisers said the debate would enable voters to compare competing policy proposals and assess the priorities of those seeking to govern Nigeria’s commercial hub.

To ensure fairness, all participating candidates will be subjected to identical debate rules, speaking times and moderation standards.

Experienced journalists will moderate the discussions, with proceedings broadcast through the television and digital platforms of the participating media organisations.

The arrangement is expected to make the debate accessible to audiences beyond those physically present at the venue.

The consortium also encouraged Lagos residents to participate in the electoral conversation by following the event and critically examining the candidates’ positions.

It specifically called on eligible voters, young people, civil society organisations, professional associations and business leaders to pay attention to the discussions.

According to the organisers, the exercise is intended to strengthen electoral accountability by encouraging candidates to explain their programmes before voters make their decisions.

The Nigeria Debate Consortium describes itself as a partnership committed to promoting democratic participation and informed public discourse through credible, non-partisan electoral debates.

With the 2027 elections approaching, the November 8 event is expected to provide an early opportunity for governorship contenders to communicate their priorities directly to the electorate.

The organisers, however, did not identify the candidates confirmed to participate in the debate in the statement provided.
