Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has described the death of media entrepreneur Dotun Oladipo as a major loss to Nigeria’s journalism industry.
Oladipo, who died on Tuesday at the age of 56, was the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Ltd., publishers of The Eagle Online.
In a condolence statement issued on Thursday by the Deputy Governor’s Senior Special Assistant, Tunde Alao, Hamzat said he received news of Oladipo’s death with shock, describing him as a journalist whose career was defined by dedication and a commitment to the development of the media.
“This is a huge loss not only to his immediate family but to the entire media community, particularly the online publishing industry, which he served with distinction for almost three decades,” Hamzat said.
The Deputy Governor highlighted Oladipo’s nearly three decades in journalism, noting that his career took him through some of Nigeria’s prominent newspapers.
Oladipo began as Politics Editor at Punch Newspapers before working with the Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass and The Sun. He later established The Eagle Online, which grew into one of the country’s recognised digital news platforms.
Hamzat said the media executive’s contribution was particularly significant as Nigeria’s journalism industry transitioned increasingly towards digital publishing.
He also recalled Oladipo’s involvement in professional organisations, including his tenure as President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers and pioneer President of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society.
According to Hamzat, Oladipo’s efforts extended beyond running a media organisation, as he actively promoted professional development and cooperation among journalists and publishers.
“Mr Oladipo’s passion for professional development within the media space, and his efforts to foster collaboration among journalists and publishers, will remain a lasting part of his legacy,” he said.
The Deputy Governor extended his condolences to Oladipo’s family, describing his passing as a loss that would be felt across the wider journalism community.
He also commiserated with the management and staff of Premium Eagle Media Ltd. and The Eagle Online, as well as colleagues and other members of the media industry.
Hamzat prayed for strength and comfort for the deceased’s family and colleagues, and asked God to grant Oladipo eternal rest.
