LASWA Deepens Ferry Safety Training With Hands-On Engine Module

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has concluded the fourth module of its Ferry Safety programme, with participants receiving practical training on engine systems and marine engineering operations.

The latest module, titled “Introduction to Engine Systems,” was designed to strengthen the technical knowledge and competence of participants, particularly in understanding the machinery that powers ferry operations.

The training featured self-paced learning facilitated by Engr. Jeremiah Akwemioh, a veteran of the Nigerian Navy, who guided mentees through key aspects of engine systems.

Participants also took part in an “Ask the Expert” session with Interferry mentors Joep Bollerman and Francesco Ruisi of Lloyd’s Register, providing an opportunity to gain further insights into ferry operations and technical safety.

A major highlight of the module was a practical onboard session aboard MV ONONEZE, an American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)-classed vessel owned by Fymak Marine & Oil Services Nig. Ltd.

The vessel is equipped with four Cummins main engines with a combined output of 5,368 kilowatts. During the practical session, mentees observed the operation of the engines and examined key auxiliary systems used in the vessel’s operations.

LASWA expressed appreciation to Fymak Marine Management and the vessel’s crew for providing participants with real-world exposure and operational insights.

The authority said the practical component was an important complement to the theoretical aspects of the programme, giving participants an opportunity to connect classroom learning with actual marine operations.

The completion of Module Four marks another stage in LASWA’s ongoing effort to strengthen safety knowledge and professional competence among ferry practitioners operating on Lagos waterways.

The programme will proceed to Module Five, which will focus on Safety Management Systems. The next module is scheduled to commence in September 2026 and will be led by Mike Corrigan, Chief Executive Officer of Interferry.
