Newcastle United have agreed a deal worth up to £52 million with Manchester City for midfielder Nico Gonzalez as the club continues its efforts to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season.
The 24-year-old Spain international is now set to move to St James’ Park after Newcastle reached an agreement with City over the midfielder’s transfer.
Gonzalez had previously expressed a desire to remain at the Etihad Stadium, but Manchester City’s decision to reshape their midfield has changed the situation. City have agreed an £85.6 million deal to sign Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi and have also brought in Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million.
Those moves have increased competition in midfield and paved the way for Gonzalez to leave after roughly 18 months in English football.
Newcastle see Gonzalez as a player who can add both Premier League experience and room for further development. His arrival also represents a change in recruitment strategy, with the club having initially focused on signing players from outside England during the current transfer window.
The change comes after several important departures, with Newcastle seeking players already familiar with the physical and tactical demands of English football.
Gonzalez joined City from Porto and made an immediate transition to the Premier League, although he has not established himself as an undisputed starter at the Etihad. He was an unused substitute when City came from behind to defeat Bournemouth 2-1 in the manager’s first Premier League match in charge. His impending move to Newcastle would make him the fourth senior midfielder to leave Manchester City this summer, following Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders.
For Newcastle, Gonzalez is expected to provide additional depth and experience in midfield while fitting the club’s preferred age profile. The transfer would also give head coach Matthias Jaissle another option as Newcastle look to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts.
With the agreement between the two clubs now in place, Gonzalez is expected to complete his move to St James’ Park once the remaining formalities are concluded.
