The Nigerian Army and the Anambra State Government have honoured retired Lieutenant General Chikaidibia Isaac Obiakor, a senior military officer remembered for his service in Nigeria and his historic role in United Nations peacekeeping operations.
Obiakor was laid to rest on October 9, 2026, at Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, Anambra State, at a ceremony attended by senior military officers, government representatives, former service chiefs and members of his family.
Representing the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, Major General T.E. Gagariga delivered an oration describing the late general as an exceptional officer whose character, professionalism and leadership earned him respect across the Armed Forces.
Obiakor’s military career included several strategic command and administrative appointments. He served as Commander of 34 Artillery Brigade and 32 Field Artillery Brigade, as well as Directing Staff at the National War College.
His other appointments included Chief of Administration of the Nigerian Army, Commander of the Headquarters Nigeria Corps of Artillery and General Officer Commanding 2 Division. These roles placed him in positions involving military leadership, operational command, administration and professional training.
Beyond his service within Nigeria, Obiakor became the first African to serve as the United Nations Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations, according to the account of his career provided at the ceremony. The appointment marked a significant milestone in his military service and brought him into a senior advisory role within the United Nations peacekeeping structure.
Anambra State Governor Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo described Obiakor as a distinguished son of the state and a role model for younger generations. He urged young people to draw inspiration from the late officer’s career and consider service in the Armed Forces.
Among those present were Soludo, representatives of the Minister of Defence and the Chief of Army Staff, former Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General O.A. Ihejirika (retd.) and NYSC Director-General Brigadier General O.O. Nafiu.
Military traditions were observed during the funeral, including the presentation of the national flag and military accoutrements to Obiakor’s next of kin. The ceremony served as a formal tribute to his years of service and the responsibilities he held during his career.
The Army’s tribute focused on his leadership and professional contributions, while the Anambra State Government highlighted his significance as a public figure whose career could inspire young Nigerians.
His burial brought together military and civilian representatives to honour a career that spanned national service and international peacekeeping responsibilities.
