Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over ongoing efforts to prevent the release of certain records linked to him in a United States court case involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Obi described the development as embarrassing, arguing that public office holders, particularly those occupying the highest office in the country, should be willing to provide clear explanations regarding issues of public interest.
Speaking amid the legal dispute in the United States, Obi said leadership requires accountability, honesty and the courage to confront questions about one’s past. According to him, leaders strengthen public trust when they openly address concerns rather than seeking to shield information from public scrutiny.
He specifically referenced concerns surrounding educational credentials, noting that questions relating to a leader’s foundational education should not remain unresolved. Obi maintained that Nigerians deserve transparent and verifiable explanations on issues that directly concern the credibility of public officials.
The former Anambra State governor expressed concern about the message such controversies send to young Nigerians, stressing that public office holders should serve as examples of integrity, transparency and ethical conduct.
According to Obi, mistakes and imperfections are part of human experience, but what matters is the willingness to accept responsibility where necessary, make amends and place national interest above personal ambition.
He further argued that political offices are temporary while the standards set by those who occupy them can influence future generations. Obi urged political leaders to recognise that the nation’s integrity must take precedence over individual aspirations.
The comments come amid heightened political discussions ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition figures increasingly scrutinising the records and conduct of public office holders. The controversy surrounding the FBI records has continued to generate debate both within Nigeria and among members of the Nigerian diaspora.
