Rivers LG: Court fixes June 3 to rule on chairmen, others’ elections

The three chairmen of Obio/Akpor, Port Harcourt City and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Areas, their vice chairmen and councillors in Rivers State, will know their fate on June 3, 2026, following a suit against their elections.

This is because a Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt presided over by Justice Stephen Jumbo, has fixed that to deliver judgement in a suit filed by three aggrieved members of People’s Democratic Party in the State, against the factional chairman of PDP, Aaron Chukwuemeka, Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), PDP and Rivers State Government.

Justice Jumbo gave the adjournment yesterday, after counsel representing the parties presented and adopted their final written addresses on both preliminary objects and originating summons.

Daily Sun learnt that, while the Rivers State Government did not file any processes in the matter and did not adopt any addresses, the judge had earlier, granted leave and application for extension of time by the plaintiffs.

The claimants, Enyi Uchechukwu, Wisdom Kalio and Uche Amadi, in an originating summon before the court, are asking the court to determine whether the Aaron Chukwuemeka-led state executive, whose congresses that brought them (executive) have been nullified by court, can validly submit list of candidates to RSIEC for the just concluded LGA elections, by virtue of the judgement of the Rivers State High Court delivered against their emergence.

The claimants also want the court to determine among other reliefs, whether the People’s Democratic Party has presented a valid list of candidates to RSIEC through Chukwuemeka as to enable the candidates to have taken part in the August 30, 2025 council elections.
