The Senate Committee on Customs and Excise has approved a revenue target of N11.074 trillion and an expenditure proposal of N1.235 trillion for the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for the 2026 fiscal year.
The approval followed the presentation of the agency’s budget proposal by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, before the committee at the National Assembly.
Chairman of the committee, Senator Isah Jibrin, commended the Customs Service for its performance in revenue generation, anti-smuggling operations and trade facilitation.
During the budget defence, Adeniyi disclosed that the Service generated N7.277 trillion in 2025, exceeding its approved revenue target of N6.584 trillion.
He attributed the performance to ongoing reforms, improved technology deployment and enhanced enforcement measures.
The Customs boss said the agency’s 2026 revenue projection would be driven by reforms including the Unified Customs Information System, stronger intelligence-led operations and improved trade facilitation processes.
He also highlighted challenges that could affect revenue performance, including global economic uncertainties and disruptions to international trade.
Following deliberations, members of the committee approved both the proposed revenue target and expenditure estimates for the 2026 fiscal year.
The committee expressed confidence in the agency’s ability to meet its revenue objectives while continuing efforts to facilitate legitimate trade and strengthen border security.
