The President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Festus Osifo, has praised the Department of State Services (DSS) for its ongoing efforts in combating terrorism, banditry and other security threats across the country.
Osifo made the remarks in Abuja, where he commended the security agency for intensifying the arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in violent crimes.
According to him, the prosecution of terrorists and bandits sends a strong message to criminal elements that unlawful activities will no longer go unpunished.
“When they are arrested and prosecuted, the bad guys get the clear message,” he said.
The labour leader also supported the position expressed by the DSS leadership that terrorists and bandits responsible for the loss of lives should face the full weight of the law, including capital punishment where applicable.
He argued that firm legal consequences would serve as a deterrent and discourage others from engaging in similar criminal activities.
“When that is done, the other bad guys will know it is no longer business as usual,” Osifo added.
The TUC president urged the DSS to sustain its operations against criminal groups and continue strengthening efforts aimed at improving national security.
While acknowledging the responsibility of organised labour to criticise government policies where necessary, he noted that positive actions by public institutions should equally be recognised and encouraged.
Osifo further commended the Director-General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, for reforms being implemented within the agency and expressed hope that the service would continue to improve its effectiveness in tackling insecurity.
He maintained that the fight against terrorism, banditry and organised crime requires sustained commitment from security agencies, government institutions and citizens working together to protect lives and property across the country.
