Umahi Unveils Flood Control Measures Along Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

The Federal Government has announced new measures to address persistent flooding along sections of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway corridor in Lagos.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this during a stakeholder engagement in Lagos, where he said the Federal Ministry of Works, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government, would construct service lanes with integrated drainage systems as part of a long-term flood mitigation strategy.

According to the minister, the initiative is aimed at tackling flooding caused by heavy rainfall and improving water management along the highway corridor. He, however, noted that properties located within 15 metres of the road alignment would be removed to create space for the planned infrastructure.

Umahi explained that the government would also implement immediate interventions, including the desilting of blocked drainage channels and waterways to improve the flow of stormwater. He warned residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage systems, stressing that offenders would face arrest and prosecution.

The minister maintained that the measures were necessary to protect lives, property and the integrity of the multi-billion-naira highway project.

Earlier, Umahi inspected the corridor alongside National Assembly leaders and contractors involved in the project. He rejected claims that the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway construction was responsible for recent flooding in parts of Lagos.

According to him, the flooding is largely a consequence of climate change and longstanding drainage challenges that predate the highway project.
