Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on young Nigerians to embrace volunteerism as a pathway to personal growth, leadership development and national transformation.
She made the appeal during a youth-focused empowerment and community service event, where she encouraged young people to adopt a mindset centred on service, innovation and positive social impact. According to the First Lady, volunteerism provides an opportunity for youths to develop practical skills, build meaningful relationships and contribute directly to the progress of their communities.
Senator Tinubu stressed that national development cannot be achieved through government efforts alone, noting that citizens, particularly young people, have an important role to play in shaping the future of the country. She urged youths to move away from attitudes of entitlement and instead focus on becoming active contributors to society through community engagement and selfless service.
According to her, volunteering offers valuable experiences that help young people build confidence, strengthen leadership abilities and prepare for future opportunities. She noted that many successful leaders and professionals developed critical life skills through community service and civic participation.
The First Lady also highlighted the importance of innovation and problem-solving, encouraging youths to identify challenges within their communities and work collaboratively towards sustainable solutions. She maintained that volunteerism creates a sense of responsibility and citizenship, helping young people understand the importance of collective action in nation-building.
Her remarks come at a time when concerns over youth unemployment, social disengagement and migration continue to dominate national conversations. Stakeholders believe that programmes promoting volunteerism could help channel youthful energy into productive activities while fostering stronger community bonds.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Federal Government and partner organisations to empower young Nigerians and harness their creativity for national development. Observers say increased youth participation in volunteer activities could contribute significantly to social development, community resilience and civic responsibility across the country.
Participants at the event welcomed the message, describing volunteerism as an effective platform for acquiring experience, developing leadership qualities and creating positive change in society. Many expressed optimism that greater youth involvement in community service would help strengthen national unity and development.
