Doris Ogala’s Arraignment Crumbles Again as Ill Health Halts Cybercrime Trial

The arraignment of popular Nollywood actress Doris Ogala on charges of cyberbullying and extortion against Pastor Chris Okafor was stalled for the second time on Tuesday due to her reported ill health.

Justice Akintayo Aluko of the Federal High Court in Lagos adjourned the case to October 28. Ogala’s legal team informed the court that she is currently undergoing medical treatment and was unfit to stand trial. However, the prosecution highlighted her recent public political engagements, questioning the severity of her condition. Ogala faces multiple counts under the Cybercrimes Act for allegedly publishing intimate materials and levelling false allegations against the prominent cleric in an attempt to extort him.

The repeated delays have drawn mixed reactions, with some observers expressing frustration over the slow pace of justice in high-profile cases involving celebrities. The matter underscores ongoing challenges within the judicial system regarding health-related adjournments and the balance between defendants’ rights and the need for timely prosecution. Pastor Chris Okafor’s camp has maintained that the allegations caused significant reputational damage.

Legal analysts suggest the case could set important precedents regarding the use of social media for defamation and extortion in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. The court is expected to demand stronger medical evidence at the next hearing.
