Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have advanced to the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup following a narrow 1-0 victory over Venezuela in Sunday’s quarter-final encounter.
A dramatic late penalty from Aishat Oduntan secured the win for the Nigerian side at the Mohammed VI Football Academy, keeping their hopes of reaching the tournament final alive.
The decisive moment arrived in the 89th minute when Oduntan converted from the penalty spot to break the deadlock after a closely contested encounter.
Until that point, both teams had struggled to find a breakthrough despite creating opportunities in front of goal.
Nigeria began the match determined to secure a place in the last four, producing an attacking display that repeatedly tested the Venezuelan defence.
The Flamingos registered 19 shots throughout the encounter, significantly more than the six attempts recorded by their South American opponents.
However, their attacking advantage did not immediately translate into goals, as Venezuela remained organised defensively and prevented Nigeria from taking an early lead.
The opening half ended goalless, leaving both teams with everything to play for after the interval.
Nigeria continued searching for an opening in the second half, maintaining pressure on the Venezuelan defence while attempting to avoid conceding at the other end.
Despite the difference in attacking opportunities, possession was evenly shared, with both teams recording 50 per cent of the ball.
The statistics reflected an encounter in which Nigeria created more chances without establishing complete control of possession.
As the match approached its closing stages, the possibility of extra time remained until the Flamingos were awarded a penalty.
Oduntan took responsibility for the spot kick and successfully converted in the 89th minute, handing Nigeria a crucial advantage.
The goal changed the complexion of the contest, leaving Venezuela with little time to produce an equaliser.
The South American side attempted to respond in the remaining minutes, but the Nigerian defence held firm to preserve the narrow lead.
The final whistle confirmed the Flamingos’ progression to the semi-finals and ended Venezuela’s hopes of advancing further in the competition.
For Nigeria, the result represents another significant achievement in their campaign, demonstrating their ability to secure victory in a tightly contested knockout fixture.
Although the Flamingos enjoyed more opportunities in attack, they required patience and a late intervention to overcome their opponents.
The victory also underlined the importance of maintaining concentration throughout the match, particularly when clear scoring opportunities failed to produce an early breakthrough.
With a place in the semi-finals secured, Nigeria will now turn its attention to the next stage of the tournament.
The Flamingos remain in contention for the world title as they seek to extend their campaign and secure a place in the final.
